Wow, Peter. Nice mansplaination there. Is bloviating on and on something of a hobby for you? How about you go "relieve your boredom" somewhere else? Asshole.

Thanks for proving, yet again, that men are self-important shitbags. :D

While I dare say it WAS men that introduced the term, I dispute the notion that women have better listening skills than men. Admittedly I haven't done a statistical survey, but I certainly know men with good listening skills, and women with terrible listening skills. If they are correlated with gender at all, O reckon the correlation must be pretty weak.

Re disrespect for other people's rationality (and our own) personally I consider it unwise to view people (including ourselves) as more rational than we are. But that doesn't mean we need to set out to deceive or manipulate it. What can help, I think, is to be clear about why we are expressing a point of view, and be quite up front about it.

For example, in the case of this comment I'm basically expressing my point of view because I feel like it, without any particular intention in mind. I'm certainly not trying to manipulate people. But suppose I was, for example, trying to convince Peg to see things a bit less through the prism of why-men-are-beastly and why-women-are-better than men (while similarly claiming, somewhat inconsistently, that we need to get away from this gender duality in any case). Then I would need to be clear about WHY I wanted to do this, and be up front about it. As it is, I reckon I've probably got better things to do - although obviously it's no coincidence that this sprang to mind as a possible motivation for commenting, beyond boredom relief (and perhaps building my reputation as a good debater, or some such).

I think the answer is multi-faceted and even the violence considered entertaining is conditional to each person as far as, who they identify with, and how it relates to their personal experiences.
I believe our culture is losing its tolerance for vulnerability and seeing others in a vulnerable state through a lens of competition/comparison (ie: them vs. us mentality) creates the illusion that the viewer is not just watching, but part of the experience giving validation to their fluctuating feelings relative to their own vulnerabilities. This goes the same for reality television and other shame inducing programs.

I just saw a guy spit, outside my office window, and that got me wondering about this question, which is how I found this thread. I have not found any good answers to the question. I'm a guy, and I don't spit. I can't think of any guy I know well enough to ask, who spits. I'm middle class, I guess, and I think spitting is more common among the working class. So I think it's not just a guy thing, it's a sociocultural thing. Any I suspect there may be a correlation with smoking. But the ultimate answer still eludes me.

I can see what your saying and realize that what I'm about to write is not from the same viewpoint. But as a current Biology student in evolution and biological ethics classes, I would like to point out that evolution refers to changes in a population of a species over a long period of time (millions of years) due to environmental pressures (i.e. drought, changes in climate, disease, loss of habitat, etc.)which leads to the individuals who have traits that better survive the pressures to survive and reproduce, therefore passing on those traits to the next generation. Humans have in recent centuries, learned to control and negate most environmental pressures. This means that natural selection is no longer a major issue to human populations. Survival of the fittest does not apply.
On a non evolution standpoint,if you want to change human actions, you have to educate the public. This way they can make informed choices. Using techno-babble doesn't help and out of context information will only hurt in the long run.

kay, so maybe it wasn't a rape scene, but a dissection, maybe like an alien abuduction, or experiment where a woman is tied down in some sterile setting... the description was rather disturbing and the ending is when the reader discovers that it is a very different take on child birth.
i don't know, it was long ago and late at night.
